If your yard gets afternoon shade, buffalo is usually the safe pick — couch and kikuyu sulk without strong sun. For a big, sunny, high-traffic backyard on a budget, kikuyu is hard to beat if you don't mind mowing. For a showpiece front lawn in full sun, couch looks the part. For most Western Sydney homes wanting one lawn that copes with everything, soft-leaf buffalo wins.
Whatever variety you choose, turf is only as good as what's underneath. Our reactive clay needs breaking up and improving with a quality underlay/topsoil so roots can establish and water doesn't just run off or pool. Lay good turf on unprepared clay and it'll struggle by the second summer. We prep the base properly so your lawn establishes fast and stays green with less water.

For most homes, soft-leaf buffalo (like Sir Walter) is the best all-rounder — it copes with our heat, sun and part shade and is tough enough for kids and pets.
Buffalo and couch are both drought-hardy once established; buffalo holds up better in part shade, couch prefers full sun.
Spring and autumn are ideal, but with proper prep and watering we lay turf year-round in Western Sydney.
